Finding Your Flow w/ Lesley Logan

Welcome back to the Scale Your Small Business Podcast with your host, Jillian Flodstrom! Today’s guest is Lesley Logan, a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher, author, and business owner. After years of teaching regular mat classes around Los Angeles and traveling to teach workshops, Lesley wanted to create a way for more students to enjoy more Pilates.

Lesley got started with her business with the idea that she wanted to offer her clients the same feeling they got doing Pilates at a gym–community, accountability, and other vital aspects of Pilates needed to become available consistently.

By creating online Mat and Reformer Pilates classes Lesley was able to help clients get their Pilates fix without fighting traffic or getting on a plane. And, sticking with Joseph Pilates’s desire for people to do their Mat and Reformer work regularly, she made them only 30 minutes long. So no matter how busy you are, you can take a half-hour for your flow.

The hardest part of growing her business, Lesley says, is maintaining memberships and having higher-than-average retention. That’s because they deliver results. The truth is, if you build it, people won’t just come. You’ve got to make sure your stuff solves the problem they have.

It’s critical to understand that you don’t have to be perfect. You can have bad lighting, you can use an iPhone to create content, you can have a small space–what matters is that you show up. Done is better than perfect. Be unapologetic about promoting yourself–you’re the real deal. You’re going to build, grow, and evolve.

The balance of running your business on the back end and providing your service can be difficult and dynamic. When you find an imbalance, Lesley suggests starting with “what’s my next hire.” That way you can identify what the root cause of the imbalance is and resolve it. Be very clear on what you do, what you automate, and what you hire for.

Lesley talks about the plus, minus, equal idea. This is a concept where everyone has a plus, a mentor or someone who offers guidance, a minus, someone to whom they bestow knowledge upon, and equal, people who are at the same level as you.

Finally, Lesley lets us know to choose one thing and go all in.
